The King's Room

I am Manectric, messenger for Great King Combusken. I've sent all the important messages, parcels, official announcements, and other important documents on the king's behalf throughout his rule over the Kingdom of Torchic. My hand has played a role in all of the key historical developments of our beautiful kingdom. My feet have travelled far and wide in the name of our Great King. Sometimes I went alone to deliver messages. Other times, I was given soldiers to safeguard my passage. Only on a number of occasions have I travelled with royals to deliver documents. I have never been accompanied by the king in my voyages; that is until today.

Today, it feels like the whole palace has been uprooted to travel to the castle of the neighbouring kingdom. Almost everybody in the palace is in the parade of caravans headed to Grovyle. The Kingdom of Torchic and Grovyle aren't on particularly good terms. In fact, our relations are deteriorating. The King of Grovyle and our own beloved king used to be friends. Last year, there were some events and other developments that started destroying the relationship between the two kingdoms. Inner turbulence in Grovyle left their king with few he could trust.

That's not to say the Great King Combusken is undependable in any way. He's a man of his word. He speaks his truth at every opportunity. And he has done our kingdom a world of good since claiming the throne forty years ago. The problem lies in the inner politicking of Grovyle and its nobles. A few years ago, King Ludicolo of Grovyle became sick. As a result of his sickness, he made some mistakes that upset the nobility. The nobility started conspiring behind his back and they started to strengthen whatever grip they had over Grovyle's military.

The Grovyle nobility convinced the sick king to have their military's top general at his side at all times. They said the general would be the king's aide and make sure his sickness didn't get in the way of stately business. At the time, the king was convinced it would be for the best. However, General Golem has remained by the king's side to this day, involved in every aspect of running the kingdom. The military, under the coordination of certain individuals of the nobility, used every excuse to keep Golem by King Ludicolo's side.

Today, we're travelling to Grovyle under the precept of a friendly visit that will warm up relations between us and our neighbours. However, the truth is that we're there to deliver a very important message to the king himself. It's a top secret message that must be delivered to the king in person with none of his military men present. Golem and his men detest the fact that we've arranged for such a meeting. It was because of their conniving that relations between the two kingdoms deteriorated. Today, they're going to do anything they can to stop me, the royal messenger Manectric, from reaching the king. And that's exactly why we needed to show up as a big group. Everybody else will act as decoys to distract Golem and his men while the Great King Combusken sneaks me into a room with King Ludicolo. There, the plan is to deliver the message to King Ludicolo. When given the chance, we will also present the evidence in the form of secret letters we intercepted last week.

There's a reason we call him the Great King. He's not only generous and wise but he's also flexible. His flexibility has proven to be a highly valuable asset for our kingdom in the past. And today, his plan is that we play it flexible. We don't know what these Grovylians will bring to the table. And so, following the command of our king, we will be flexible in our approach. Let's see if I end up delivering the message after after all. Maybe someone else under our king's command will end up doing it.

As we arrived in the capital city of Grovyle, also called Grovyle City, we were led by officials towards the castle where King Ludicolo resides. As we entered the castle, everything followed standard procedures. It was all business as usual. No funny business, at least not until one of the members of the royal family made some threatening gestures towards our party.

He advanced rather abruptly along the c-file and made a comment towards Prince Plusle about how he wasn't the crown prince. Prince Plusle isn't a power-hungry madman who would fight his brothers to get the throne. However, he is King Combusken's eldest son and therefore it appeared as strange to some people as to why he wasn't crowned as the heir. The true story is that Prince Plusle cares not for running the kingdom. He has expressed his willingness to do so but what so few outside of our palace walls know is that it was Prince Plusle himself who nominated his younger brother Minun to be the next king.

Prince Minun had proven himself to be a marvelous statesman. He excelled in every aspect of statecraft while his older brother sought isolation to work on his music and art. The Great King agreed that Minun was more fit for the job. King Combusken also knew that Prince Plusle dreaded the idea of being the king for it could mean that he had to spend time away from his art and music to serve the kingdom. However, Plusle's power was in his art, in his creativity and his great imagination. He would be of greater service to his people in his studio than on the throne.

King Combusken tried to play it down but things got out of hand between Prince Plusle and the Grovyle royal. They got into an argument and it took a servant of King Ludicolo to step in before things calmed down. The Grovyle royal was taken to the back while Prince Plusle also left the palace, telling us he would be ready to return with us once the time came. He went outside the castle walls, accompanied by a few personal guards. Things were off to a shaky start but what we didn't yet know was that Golem and his men were going to do everything they possibly could to keep things shaky.

King Combusken ordered the caravans to be inside the castle walls. He told Grovyle officials that this was our standard protocol and that the safety of our caravans was important. As our caravans shuffled around to an area denoted d2 in the courtyard, one of our servants overlooking the area on d3 noticed some whispering near the back gate of the castle. He reported to King Combusken that he saw some gatekeepers whispering with a royal family member. The royal then stepped outside onto terrace h6.

The Great King remained quiet but he was quietly thinking while observing the big courtyard. Seeing that I seemed concerned, he gave me an assuring look and nodded as if to say "Everything is okay." If the Great King could have a motto it would be exactly that: "Everything is okay." King Combusken was a very composed figure. He was the father of the Torchic people and he was well aware of the role he played. He sought to set an example to all by never letting his emotions override his frame of mind. He taught this to his personal guards, his family, others who were close to him and to me, his official messenger.

Next, I was a bit surprised by the king's move. He ordered a troop of caravans to make it look like they accidentally stumbled into the wrong area of the courtyard by sending them to e5. At first, the Grovylian officials seemed quite cool about it as they assured us that King Ludicolo would be ready to see us shortly. They kept saying that he was feeling a bit under the weather that day and just needed some more time before he could officially greet us. Meanwhile, the officials kept insisting that General Golem and his men would be more than happy to meet us instead.

King Combusken reminded them that the top general didn't quite reach the requirements to officially meet a king. Only King Ludicolo was entitled to the meeting. I was a bit surprised to see what was happening in the background as King Combusken discussed this with the Grovyle officials. Somewhere in the courtyard, horseback infantry had been mobilized and it looked like they were scoping out our caravans from their position in c6. That was strange. These Grovylians didn't think we were here for a skirmish did they? We were here with our king on friendly terms. There was no way we would risk a fight with our king right here. This must've been the work of Golem and his men.

King Combusken noticed the Grovyle infantry as well. He quickly sent Prince Minun to the side of our caravans to keep things cool. Minun stepped closer to the caravans by moving up along the f-file, a long corridor between castle walls that stretched from the front of the castle to the back. As Minun approached, so did some castle servants. The servants got real close to our caravan but not too close. They stayed on the little balcony on d6. It looked like they were trying to communicate with the caravan head. Minun stayed by the caravan's side for support but also didn't get too close in order to not escalate the situation. He wanted to make it seem like there was no situation and that everything was cool.

These Grovylians weren't always this hostile. The nobility had militarized the kingdom in the last couple of years. And right now, things were getting tenser still. King Combusken had another troop of caravans shuffle into f3 and told them to act like they didn't know what they were doing. They were told to act aloof a little as our king scoped out the courtyard. The other set of caravans nonchalantly stepped into the open area of f3. Just then, General Golem made his first appearance.

Golem appeared from inside a room in the castle. It was room c7 as far as I could observe. He seemed to be trying to get the attention of the servants who were now flirting with the caravan head. The general looked quite stern as he called out to the sevants and made a few demands. We couldn't hear what they were saying but we had had our first impression of the general. He looked very unhappy. He looked like he wanted to control everything as he shouted orders at the servants.

King Combusken was well aware of what was going on. General Golem was making a show of dissatisfaction. And our king certainly knew that a few servants weren't the true cause of that dissatisfaction. The true cause was our presence within their castle walls. We were there acting like the friendly neighbour. We acted unaware of the fact that our relationship with Grovyle had worsened to a critical degree over the last two years.

The King pulled a servant closer to himself, whispered something, they both laughed and the servant moved to d2. The king was thinking up a plan. I had seen the king's genius unfold in the form of a great plan in the past. Right now was no different. We knew better than to ask him questions, especially on foreign land. We didn't want to embarrass him by doing so. More importantly, we knew it would ruin the fun. We just observed and watched the king's game. He was smiling after his brief exchange with our servants. Even when he saw Golem harassing more servants, the king kept his cool. General Golem had pulled another servant to his side. The servant was then seen being shaken with the general's strong hands on her shoulders. He then pushed her away and she scuffled to room d7. What was going on?

After a few moments of checking her belongings and breathing deeply for composure, our king's faithful servant moved outside the crowd of royals and other nobility figures who had come out for the grand show that day. She moved to corridor c3 between where we waited and the large courtyard. She moved in a cold and calculated way and there was no doubt in my mind that she was following the king's orders to the letter. I was certain she wouldn't let the king down.

Suddenly there were loud noises from the inside of the castle. We saw soldiers moving. We saw gatekeepers shifting around. We saw a large group of people moving behind the castle window frames. Within that group was a sickly old man wearing the throne. At first, I imagined the king was finally ready to meet us. However, there was something uncanny about the high level of soldiers and military officers around him. Just then, a castle official sent the message to our king that the king needed just a bit more time. King Combusken wasn't pleased but he didn't show it. He just smiled and said that we had all the time in the world. His expression changed when he looked at Minun out in the courtyard and sent him discreet nod, a signal that only Minun understood and that very few others saw.

Minun didn't delay. He acted quickly and got the attention of the head of the caravan. The caravan head knew exactly what to do. He began relocating to a side entrance to the castle at f7. Once outside the side door, two soldiers plopped out of the caravans without a sound. They were unarmed and highly alert. They seeped inside the castle without anyone noticing. I felt my stomach tense up a little. I glanced over at the king. He was still smiling and still calm as ever. I breathed and told myself to stay calm. I had been at the king's side this whole time; best seat in the house. I knew he would call on me when the time came but for now I had to focus. I had to remain calm so that I could do my part without blunder. I kept breathing.

Suddenly, a troop of horseback soldiers arrived outside of where we were all waiting. The officer talked to us from pavilion e4. He said that the servants and members of the nobility needed to be searched before we could enter King Ludicolo's presence. This was not standard protocol. This was the finger of the Grovyle military poking around in matters outside of their jurisdiction. The servant who had received special instructions from the king earlier shot a glance back at the king. The king acted like he didn't notice and that there was no situation. Not able to get the king's attention, the servant looked back at me with worried eyes. She seemed distressed.

I tried to give her a reassuring look just like the king always did with his royal subjects. However, something in the distance caught my eye. I saw the tail of the caravans moving towards the back wall of the castle. They seemed to be headed towards the back gate. I felt fear. What were they up to back there? How was this connected to our mission of sending a secret message to the king? What did King Combusken have in mind? There were too many questions, too many thoughts racing through my mind. And just when I thought this was too much, there was more.

Some of the soldiers were arguing with the distressed servant from earlier. She refused to let them search her. The soldiers all moved to c3 and tried to intimidate her. And to think they were doing all of this right in front of the Great King. What a disgrace! She huffed and puffed and told them her personal items were in there. The officer in charge of the soldiers assured her that if that were the case, she wouldn't have anything to worry about.

There was now a storm of chaos brewing within the courtyard. I saw some gatekeepers rush out of the main building and rush back to where I saw the caravan disappear earlier. There was some kind of ruckus back there with Grovylian soldiers and gatekeepers yelling and shouting. Meanwhile, right in front of us, the soldiers had grabbed the servant to take her away. That didn't go down so well with a few members of the royal family. King Combusken's cousin who was situated along the b-file, stepped up to the soldiers and said that they would need to fight him before taking the servant away. The head soldier said that this was a problem and that they'd have to return with the general himself. The soldiers disappeared into the castle building while the servant was told to disappear as well. Our king told her to find Prince Plusle outside the castle walls and stay with him until it was time to leave. She quickly left.

King Combusken got the attention of one of the guards who was on the a-file, 1st rank. The king simply uttered one word and the guard stepped into the b-file. That word was "Positions." What happened next added to the shock of what was going on. A Grovylian servant challenged Prince Minun's position by telling him that he couldn't be standing there and that he needed to get back to where we were.  Behind the servant was Golem, staring with cold and aggressive eyes. He was obviously behind the order to have Minun removed.

Minun came back to King Combusken feeling a bit shaken up. The king told him the same thing he had told the servant earlier. "Find Prince Plusle outside and stay with him until it's time to return." Minun left but Minun's wife didn't like that one bit. She started snapping back at the servant and it looked like she was being very heavyhanded with this poor servant, left in this situation by General Golem. What happened next, put Minun's royal consort in her place. General Golem himself came to the site and told Minun's wife to calm down. She looked back at the king who gave her a look. She knew exactly what it meant. She left the castle walls to find Plusle and Minun.

It looked like General Golem wanted the attention of King Combusken but the king wasn't having any of it. The general was a military man who needed to know his place. The king would only meet with his counterpart, the King of Grovyle. King Combusken pulled another one of our guards from the h-file to his side to face General Golem. King Combusken's thinking was that a military man can speak with another military man but not with the king. Actually, the truth is that King Combusken had met with and spoken to all kinds of military officers from other lands. He just didn't like this show of attitude he was getting from Golem and so he insisted that the general know his place.

The general seemed disgruntled by the king's brushing him off. He ordered some soldiers to come to his position by advancing along the g-file. This general's show of force didn't stop. We all knew what was going on. Golem was trying to create any problem he possibly could to deter us from ever meeting the king today. Golem had no problem causing a diplomatic stir, creating some chaos, and having us go home without having met King Ludicolo. That's why King Combusken had to play it smart. We couldn't go down the route that Golem wanted for us.

The Great King ordered the troop of caravans to move to d4 so that his royal guard may entertain General Golem for a short while. However, Golem didn't like that at all. He moved into e3, stepping closer to the king and evading the guard. He asked to meet with the king in private for a few minutes to discuss the meeting with King Ludicolo. King Combusken wasn't smiling. He sized the general up. He looked at me, he looked at this guard, and then he looked off into the distance.

Without saying a word, King Combusken reshuffled himself along the 1st rank to avoid the altercation with Golem. This angered Golem. Golem looked to the back and shot some orders at his soldiers across the battlefield. They tried to confiscate the troop of caravans. However, the Great King's cousin was there once more to serve his people. He stopped the soldiers from trying to confiscate the caravan. He ordered the caravan to find Prince Plusle and Prince Minun outside the castle walls and stay with them until it was time to return. King Combusken was aware of what was going on. Golem was trying to intimidate us.

I feared for King Combusken's cousin. He was vulnerable at d4. Nearby was General Golem on e3. What if the general tried something? Instead of making an aggressive move against our king's cousin, he shouted some orders at a Grovylian royal family member along the h-file. It might have been a distant cousin because actually I had no idea who this guy was supposed to be. I'd never seen his pictures show up in our briefings. He was probably some low-level royalty the military could bribe. He had this guy move closer to our king's position. King Combusken raised an eyebrow but didn't show any signs of being moved.

Just then, a member of our nobility and a trustworthy young man on the c-file moved up next to King Combusken's cousin. He asked the castle officials, who were there to take care of our movements in and out of the castle, what was taking so long. He stated that we had seen the king walking earlier and that he didn't seem that sick. We wanted to get things moving and good for this young noble for asking the right question. What was taking so long? Meanwhile, Golem and his men were taking their time. He had his soldiers on the g-file slowly creep towards our position. He still had that hateful look on his face. He even shot a look at me. I looked away and focused on my breathing. I represented the king. There was no way I was getting into a staring match with this guy. I had to remain calm and composed just like the Great King taught us.

Just then, Great King Combusken said something to me in a quiet voice that shot a rush of excitement up my spine. "Manectric...it's time." I knew what to do. This was a part of the king's great game. He didn't need to tell me where to stand or where to go. He just let me know that it was time to move and I was up on my feet. From where I was, I scoped out a little plan that could just work. I stepped out onto b6, hoping that I could simply meet the king myself. It would have been enough to get the special message to the king. King Combusken's mission wasn't to have a meeting with the Grovylian king and discuss worldly issues. His plan was to have the special message delivered and that's what counted the most. It wouldn't matter if I went in alone to have a brief exchange with King Ludicolo.

Some soldiers by the king were alarmed by my gaze, scoping out the front of the king's room. They barked a few orders and a servant appeared at the door at c6. The servant looked at me with wide and fearful eyes, gulped, and lowered her head slightly as if to shoot me a message from her forehead that said "Don't." My plan to have a quick exchange wouldn't work out at this rate. We needed to shuffle around and get this job done.

I nudged the young noble in front of me. I told him to talk to the castle officials and ask them if it would be permissible for me to enter the king's room before the meeting and take a quick look around as a safety precaution to protect our king. This young noble knew well that we had no such precautions. If we thought a certain place might have something dangerous for our king, we wouldn't let the king enter.  However, he knew what I was thinking. He started talking to the castle officials. I could tell from their facial expressions that they weren't going to allow that.

The young noble, knowing my plan, took it further and started making all kinds of demands. He demanded the officials prepare some food or snacks for our waiting king if the wait were to be any longer than this. The castle officials whispered something to the servant guarding the king's room before disappearing into the room themselves. The servant talked to the young noble for a short second. She didn't look happy. The noble looked at me and then went to have a chat with the king before leaving the castle walls.

Next, our king talked to the guard right next to him. I didn't hear what he was saying but at the end I heard him say "Go." The guard moved to the c-file and it looked like he was going to go right up to the door of the king's room. Seeing that, some of the Grovylian soldiers had the king leave the room and enter the lobby area inside.

I stepped up to the guard as I had a plan in mind. If this guard and I could get past the soldiers, we could move up along the c-file to deliver a message together. "Here, take this," I told the guard as I gave him the secret letters we had intercepted. The guard already knew what these were. Everybody in our party knew what those letters were about. I hoped we could finally make this happen. However, the servant from before saw our actions and stepped back to her previous position guarding the door. This time her facial expression was even more stern as she shot her forehead towards me with a tilt of her head to the side. I could've laughed because of how seriously these Grovylians were reacting to our presence in the castle. However, I kept my cool. And I realized that they must have been shielding their king from the news he was about to receive for a reason.

Just then, King Combusken's royal guard took it upon himself to go to e1, close enough to General Golem to tell him something. He had only begun uttering a few syllables when the general guffawed in his face and left. We saw the general join the unknown royal on the h-file. They seemed to be discussing something as the royal started tapping the shoulder of the soldier next to him. I couldn't help but think of how our king had also refused to speak to the general earlier. And just now, the general tried something similar with the king's guard. I took a look over at our king. He was quietly laughing and shaking his head as if to say "I don't believe this."

This time, it was my turn. I waltzed up to the servant guarding the door to have a word with her. She wouldn't even listen to what I had to say. She kept telling me that King Ludicolo was not yet ready to meet anyone from our party and that I should step back. I eyed another way to reach the king but first I saw a soldier advance along the g-file to talk to King Combusken's family members along the 2nd rank. I could just imagine the soldier asking the Great King's family if the general could have a word with him before the meeting. Later, I was told by the king that this was exactly what that soldier asked for.

Seeing as everyone in the courtyard was distracted and watching the soldier talking to our king's family members, I pivoted to the side and almost entered the lobby when the servant cut me off. She insisted that I could not enter. At this point, I was being playful with her and asking her why not. She remained stern but I started joking about how King Ludicolo and I were old friends and how I just wanted to say hi. "Please step back sir," was her response.

Just then, King Combusken's servant came by to b5. She started asking the Grovylian servant a few questions. With her there distracting the servant, I could have entered the lobby. However, some gatekeepers from the other side of the castle saw what was happening and stepped out onto the 7th rank. They began giving inaudible orders to the servant. Neither the servant nor we could hear what the gatekeepers were saying. I was thinking about what we could do to get this meeting with the two kings underway.

Just then, King Combusken's cousin advanced along the d-file. That helped because a soldier along the e-file was distracted by him, thereby clearing the corridor. The king's guard now had an empty corridor along the e-file that was going to be very useful in a few minutes.

I looked over at Golem who shared the 6th rank with me. He was sending me a death-glare. I smiled, winked, and then brushed by the side of the servant to enter the king's room. The king was in the lobby but I could get to him through the door inside. I opened that door and said "Dear King..." before being cut off by the servant. She was yelling at me to get out. The king seemed discomforted by his servant's actions. I was at the edge of losing it. I did my best to stay calm but this servant was really getting on my nerves. Just then I heard the voice of King Combusken's servant on the b-file outside. She was calling out to someone.

From the window, I saw the king's royal guard running into the lobby at e8. Golem and his men were too far away to do anything about it. The king couldn't ignore the guard, also thanks to our servant's charm keeping him locked into that position. Her position on b5 was key to this victory. The royal guard wasted no time. He told the king immediately that his life was in grave danger. He handed the king the secret letters and the king's facial expression suggested that he was in shock. King Ludicolo took the letters and opened them right away. He read the first few lines of one of the letters, looked up at the royal guard and said "Thank you."

He proceeded to read the full letter in front of us all. Now he knew about the operation against him from his own men. We had done our job. There was no more need for a meeting between the kings. It was time to go home.

Checkmate

Soon, we were outside the castle walls. King Combusken did end up meeting King Ludicolo very briefly. We saw them hug and heard the Grovylian king thanking our Great King for the service he had done. Golem was arrested and locked up in the dungeon. We returned home with a smile and a feeling of satisfaction. It was over now. Relations with Grovyle would return to normal as King Ludicolo now had a chance of holding onto his kingdom. The plan to oust him from power wasn't fair and it wouldn't have served the greater good. It was Great King Combusken who served the greater good by restoring order in our neighbour's kingdom. That's the kind of king he was. He stood up for what was right. He risked his own safety to protect King Ludicolo. The Grovylians would no longer be subjected to over-militarization. They could enjoy a civil society and we could enjoy knowing that we did our part to help.
