Always in the Present Moment
I was considering a different title for this post. Something along the lines of: "Never Bored" or "Defeat Boredom Every Step of the Way." If either of those titles feel closer to you then feel free to pretend this post was titled as such. And if you want to generate your own title along those lines, then all the better. Use your imagination.
So what is this post about then? Is it about staying present in the now moment? Is it about coming up with ways to not feel bored during these times? Or is it about using your imagination? Well, I can sense the excitement among those of you who are intuiting that it is about all of the above. Imagine that were a cycle feeding off of one another. Good! You've got the imagination part down.
People need to hear this message: Now may be a time of isolation but it doesn't need to be a time of boredom. It can be a time of great relaxation. You can still be happy. Each day can still be great. Of course, it takes that first level of precaution which is indeed self-isolation. Be safe but not bored. Boredom is being out of focus. People who are happily locked into their focus at this time could not possibly be bored.
Imagine a grandmaster architect working away on one of his designs. He has forgotten all concept of time. You could call his name and he wouldn't hear you. Why is that? For one, he's a grandmaster at his art and mastery doesn't come without focus. He is absorbed in concentration. Secondly, he must be doing what he loves. His craft holds such deep reverberations within him that he loses himself in it. He wouldn't imagine doing anything else with his life. See? He's imagining too but a little differently than bored folk. In other words, he's using his imagination together with his spirit to create something of personal importance.
For many people, I feel that boredom is trying to communicate something much deeper to you. That feeling of boredom has something to do with your thoughts. What are you thinking about in relation to yourself in the present moment that is keeping you in a state of boredom? Are you thinking about your own art? Why not? You have been using your imagination to think about all kinds of other things but why not this one important thing? That's exactly what your boredom wants to get through to you!
And I use the word art in a looser sense than usual here. Art is meant to mean your art of life, what you're creating out of your life. It could mean your lifestyle. It could be your perceptions that you like to keep working on. I know German speakers will be thinking of the word Lebensart, which translates to way of life. Recently, I read someone write that we're all living the same lifestyle during times like these. That is true to some degree but I think it goes a little deeper than that. The artist who spent his whole day feeling bored didn't have the same lifestyle today as the artist who was busy creating something of great importance. And we are all artists creating our life with our thoughts..
Why aren't you working on your art? You haven't found it yet? That's part of the fun! You could be exploring yourself. You could be trying new things and experimenting with truth. You could be daydreaming. The feeling of boredom is a communication between you and life. Talk to it! Have you been feeding your soul recently?
I want to talk about myself a little bit. For one, I don't feel boredom one bit. Ace Beaming "Always in the Present Moment" Sun is busy creating. Every day I spend part of my waking hours, creating dance music. It's my calling. To create dance music is part of my purpose and I'm taking steps forward along that path. For me, this time has been an opportunity to create. What is your dream?
Secondly, being present all the time helps me save time. Sometimes I observe that certain thoughts do not serve me and I do my best to refocus. By shifting my focus, I spend more time on things that are more important. I clear my mind of thoughts. And I get lost in my creation when I am creating. Anytime I feel that I am starting to think too much or in directions that are useless, I stop it.
You have the power to stop all thoughts. You are not your thoughts. Let that sink in for a moment. Anxiety is a result of overthinking, which is the opposite polarity to being in the present moment. So whenever you make an effort, or an effortless shift, towards present moment centration, you are no longer letting thoughts have power over you. When you use your thoughts deliberately, this is also shifting towards present moment centration. Using your thoughts to create is a much better use of them. And it will help you save much time too.
So now that we've talked about staying present and using your imagination (and not letting it use you), let's talk about another aspect of the cycle. Let's talk about the various things we can do to defeat boredom. The most important idea that comes to my mind is purpose. What is your purpose? It wouldn't be half as effective to sit here making a list of all the possible activities you could be doing. I've seen such lists and that's fine but what's even more effective is creating your own list based on your own purpose. Centre your day around what's ultimately important to you. And I can hear the bells ringing for some of you who have yet to ask this question. What is your purpose? Find it and write it all over the walls. You'll come out of this with an expanded version of yourself.
I've seen people listing their favourite books and movies as tips and suggestions to overcome the challenges of the day. More importantly, work on your own lists. Read a book and add it to your list. Watch your favourite movies and add them to your list. What about your favourite music? Make a new playlist. And find new articles to add to your list as well. It's important that you spend time with what is important right now. And sometimes those things are not-yet-discovered. Explore.
This post is not meant to be a comprehensive guide to what to do during isolation. Oppositely, it should just serve as a nudge to make your own comprehensive guide for your own use. Ask the important questions. Meditate and don't let your thoughts run your mind. Stay connected to friends and family. Communicate with yourself. Use your imagination and create something new. Observe your thoughts and stay present. You have the power to enjoy this. Empower yourself.

It's a frame of mind thing, an imagination thing, a soul thing. |
