Gang Som Sandwich

The idea of this sandwich was a running joke between some of my students and I for a long time now. During the breaks we have sandwiches, usually with jam or chocolate. And a lot of the kids, and some teachers, would enjoy that. I would always joke and tell the students to go have some gang som sandwiches (แซนวิชแกงส้ม). Actually I would try to plug this joke in at various other opportunities as well. Whenever an example for an item of food was necessary the Gang Som Sandwich seemed to make an appearance alongside the usual suspects like pizza and hotdogs. So what happened yesterday when I didn't make enough rice to accompany Ying's gang som? Well, the pictures tell the story.

Finally, the Gang Som Sandwich has manifested!

Gang Som Tofu

The moment in which the lotus stems(สายบัว) are introduced into the raging curry. Gang is the word for curry in Thai. And som(pronounced with a short /o/ sound) means orange - both the colour and the fruit just like English and German. In Turkish, there are two separate words for the fruit and the colour, portakal and turuncu. What about in any languages you know? Please post an answer in the comments!

Ying was teaching me how to make the orange curry. I had asked her to do so a while back because I love Thai curries. It's such a common recipe in southern Thai households and I wanted to digest just one more element of the local culture.

The lotus stems grow in water. They're planted in streams and natural canals. Afterwards they end up in your kitchen and then on your cutting board. You already know where they eventually end up.
